MCG Youth & Arts offers art classes for adults as well as youth. Take the time out of your busy life to pause, connect and create in one of Pittsburgh’s best art facilities. Whether you’re an artist, art educator, art lover, or someone seeking a hands-on hobby, our staff of professional teaching artists will help you nourish your spirit in our beautiful and unique facility.

Studio Pottery
Teaching Artist: Jeff Guerrero
Jan 6 – Feb 24 (8 classes)

Whether you’re a total beginner or an experienced potter, you’ll have a great time at MCG. Although we tend to gravitate towards wheel throwing and functional pottery, you are welcome to create hand-built ornamental and sculptural work, as well. Works made in this class will be high-fired in our gas kiln so they’ll look great and also be microwave and dishwasher safe.

Communicating with Illustrator

Open to: All Experience Levels
Learn to create infographics, flyers, advertisements, and more in the industry standard program, Adobe Illustrator. In this 5 week course you will learn basic and advanced techniques and tools that will take your digital illustration to a new level. Each week we will do a new project that targets different ways of communicating with visual tools. All the tools and techniques you learn will translate to creative art projects as well.

Photoshop in Style(s)

Explore the roots of Expressionism, Dadaism and Art Nouveau while using Photoshop to create unique works of art. Photoshop is the industry standard program used by graphic designers to work with pixel-based images. Some of the projects include an expressionist portrait, an Edvard Munch inspired landscape and a Dadaist collage. Besides learning many of Photoshop’s tools you will have the opportunity to use Wacom tablets enabling you to draw with a stylus instead of a mouse.

Registration Info

Materials fees cover the basic supplies that are provided and necessary for completion of each course as determined by the course instructor. Students interested in working with more specialized materials or working in greater volume than is allotted will be responsible for the purchase of these additional materials.

Students who register by mail may assume acceptance unless otherwise notified. No confirmation will be sent. MCG will make every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced. However, MCG reserves the right to cancel any course and to substitute faculty when necessary.

Spaces are limited! Please register in advance to reserve your space. Payment must accompany registration. Applications are processed in the order received and no spaces will be held without full payment. Space permitting, students may enter a class after the start date however class fees will not be prorated.

Class cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee and materials fee will be refunded by check. Students may opt-out before the second class begins by calling MCG. In this case, a refund minus a $25 cancellation fee will be given. After the start of the second class, no refunds will be made regardless of the number of class sessions you attend.

Educator Scholarships & Act 48 HOURS
Scholarships for Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) teachers and PAEA members are 25% and 10%, respectively, off tuition only and do not cover materials fees. PPS educators are eligible to earn Act 48 hours through the district by completing appropriate documentation at the end of the course. For non-PPS educators, the fee is $2.00 per class to receive ACT 48 hours for Allegheny Intermediate Unit.
